Juried Student Exhibition Showcases Talented Art Students
July 07, 2017
The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries will present the Old Dominion University Art Department's annual Student Juried Exhibition from July 15 to August 13.
The exhibition is juried by Jutta-Annette Page, executive director of the Barry Art Museum, which is projected to open in 2018. Page is an internationally acclaimed glass curator who held curatorial positions at the Toledo Museum of Art and the Corning Museum of Glass before joining ODU earlier this year.
A reception for the Juried Student Exhibition, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Gordon Art Galleries on July 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. The galleries are located at 4509 Monarch Way, in the University Village.
The exhibition's artworks represent the breadth and quality of work being produced by undergraduate students in several disciplines offered by the art department, such as fibers, drawing and design, graphic design, print and photo media, painting and three-dimensional media.
"Today, when media indiscriminately streams vast amounts of visual imagery, a juried show enables student artists to leave that turmoil behind and see their own works through the eyes of a single person and the process of thoughtful selection," said Agnieszka Whelan, senior lecturer of art history. "The annual juried show is the means by which the public can see, appreciate and perhaps collect the work of young, talented artists at the beginning of what may be fruitful and distinguished careers in the arts."
The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries exhibit works by nationally and internationally recognized self-taught artists, contemporary artists working in all media, and local and regional artists connected with Old Dominion University.
It is free and open to the public, with parking in the 45th Street garage. Hours: Tuesday - Saturday, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.
