Monarch Dining to Add New Menu Items to Broderick Dining Commons

By Noell Saunders

Monarch Dining is adding 140 menu items to the Kate and John R. Broderick Dining Commons food stations and swapping out less popular dishes based on student feedback.

The new items include a weekly rotating menu of chicken, beef, shrimp and tofu ramen noodle bowls and a build-your-own-burrito choice. There will also be two sushi options available for lunch and dinner.

Old Dominion students, staff and faculty members can also expect faster service this fall as Monarch Dining introduces a new food-ordering app, Tapingo. It will be similar to the popular app OrderUp, which allows people to order meals from their cell phones and have it ready for pickup. Students will be able to connect their meal plans and Monarch Plus accounts to Tapingo.

Kimberly Thompson, marketing manager for Monarch Dining, said the goal is to give students an opportunity to use their time wisely.

"We don't want students spending a lot of time standing in line especially at busy times in between classes," Thompson said. "We want students to be able to have time to connect with each other and participate in activities."

Monarch Dining also has opened Pizza Fusion on Monarch Way. The eatery provides gourmet pizza, including organic and gluten-free options. Elsewhere, grab-and-go items from Subway and Einstein Bros. Bagels are now available at the Batten Arts and Letters building.

In addition, Monarch Dining is moving the juice bar, located in the Student Recreation Center, to the food court in Webb Center. It will be replaced with a location providing made-to-order salads, bottled beverages and a variety of snacks.

Legends dining hall at Whitehurst Residence Hall will undergo renovations, including expanded seating.
