Attucks Theatre Will Be Stage for Premiere of Two Monumental Works by Adolphus Hailstork
The I. Sherman Green Chorale, the Diehn Chorale of Old Dominion University, the Schola Cantorum and the Eastern Virginia Brass will join their talents Monday, April 28, at Norfolk's historic Attucks Theatre for "Remember and Rejoice," a sesquicentennial musical commemoration of the Civil War with a world premiere work by ODU Eminent Scholar and professor of music, Adolphus Hailstork.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
The massive choral and brass premiere, "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloomed," based on a poem by Walt Whitman, will be preceded by two movements, "Fanfare" and "Epilogue: Cauldron of Peace," from Hailstork's new brass trio, "Ghosts in Grey and Blue."
Additional works for chorus and brass give voice to remembering the struggle of the Civil War and the struggle that continues, and rejoices in the accomplishments of 150 years.
This is a monumental partnering of the three chorales, the EVB trio and Hailstork, an internationally renowned composer. The Diehn Chorale is the premiere choral ensemble of ODU, directed by Nancy Klein. The I. Sherman Green Chorale, directed by Elizabeth Eccles, is in its 42nd season presenting the best of the chorale masterworks and also exposing a vast community to the outstanding contributions of African American composers and singers. Schola Cantorum, marking its sixth season and under artistic directorship of Agnes Mobley-Wynne, performs choral music from early to contemporary classical composers.
Tickets for the concert are $5 and may be purchased through the Virginia Arts Festival box office by calling 282-2822.
The program is presented as part of the Virginia Arts Festival with the support of the Virginia Commission for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, the city of Norfolk Commission on the Arts and Humanities, Stihl Inc. and the Eastern Virginia Brass Society.
