  • Ju Yun: Fragments of Memory
    August 28 to November 14
    Opening reception August 27, 6 to 8 p.m.
Born in South Korea before immigrating to the United States, Ju Yun works between traditional Korean and Western contemporary forms of art. Her mixed-media, layered compositions take inspiration from spirituality, mass culture, and hybrid identity.
  • Artist’s Talk with Ju Yun
August 27, 12:30 PM Hixon Art Studio Building
  • Bread + Puppet Theater: Sculpture in Action
    September 4 to December 12
    Opening reception September 3, 6 to 8 p.m.
Over six decades, Bread and Puppet Theater and its founders Peter and Elka Schumann have employed a visual language through puppetry to satirize systems of power, call everyday people to action, and honor humanity’s creative place within the sweeping breadth of life. This exhibition features common recurring puppets and characters who have acted in the company’s processions, protests, plays, and pageants since the 1960’s. They are presented in active, vibrant tableaus true to the company’s practice of putting art into action.
  • Exhibition Tour with Curator Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth
    Oct. 7, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
In coordination with the 49th Annual ODU Litfest Make Room for Wonder [https://www.odu.edu/life/culture/arts/litfest], Gordon Art Galleries Curator Jasper Waugh-Quasebarth will lead a tour of the exhibition, focusing on the visual language and storytelling at the heart of Bread and Puppet Theater.
  • Food, Community, and Climate on the Eastern Shore
    September 8 to September 24
In 2023, Eastern Shore residents old and new began telling their stories about food with the Virginia Folklife Program of Virginia Humanities. The ways we and our neighbors eat, harvest, and cook food all mark cultural continuity and change in our communities. The team interviewed and photographed people working in agriculture, seafood, restaurants, markets and more about both their culinary traditions and how they navigate all of these changes. The story of food on the Eastern Shore — as told to us by the people who live there — may hold answers to future cultural and climate resilience.
  • Curator’s Talk with Virginia State Folklorist Katy Clune
    Sept. 24, 12:30-1:30
Join us during activity hour for a closing event with Virginia State Folklorist Katy Clune (Virginia Humanities) about collecting oral histories, foodways, and changing environments. Clune will play clips from an audio documentary project, discuss ongoing documentary work, and the future of the project.
