Norfolk Camp Sampler: 5 Days, 5 Camps, Big Fun
February 27, 2013
Five remarkable locales - the Virginia Zoo, Norfolk Botanical Garden, d'Art Center, Nauticus and Old Dominion University - have joined forces to offer children the ultimate camp experience. Introducing the Norfolk Camp Sampler, Norfolk's unique new collaboration providing children, ages 5- 8, with an opportunity to sample the best, kid-friendly camp programs in Norfolk during spring break, April 1-5, 2013.
For parents of young children, deciding to start their little ones in camp can be difficult, prompting the question: "What does my child like enough to spend a week doing?" The Norfolk Camp Sampler is designed to allow children to "test the waters" and explore a variety of interests like animals, nature, art, aquatics and adventure.
During the week of spring break, April 1-5, youngsters can try five camps in five days. Campers spend a day at each locale: painting at the d'Art Center, walking on the Wisconsin at Nauticus, exploring Worlds of Wonder at Norfolk Botanical Garden, climbing a rock wall at ODU and having an up-close animal encounter at the Virginia Zoo.
"I wish I had this opportunity for my daughter. It is hard to get a 5-year-old to make up their mind on anything, let alone where they want to spend a week in camp," says D'Arcy Weiss. The Norfolk Camp Sampler allows children to make a personal connection with each venue, and when they love one of the camps - parents can sign up for a full week in the summer!
The Norfolk Camp Sampler venues have worked hard to create an entirely unique experience for children, parents and the community. "It's really a taste of great things to offer kids in Norfolk. I know this partnership fits in perfectly with Mayor Fraim's priorities for our city," says the Virginia Zoo's executive director, Greg Bockheim.
The Norfolk Camp Sampler costs $200 for the week and meets 9 a.m. to 3 pm, Monday - Friday, at a different Norfolk venue each day. Children ages 5-8 from all over Hampton Roads are encouraged to participate. The deadline to enroll is March 20 - or sooner for camps that fill up.
