Two ODU Public Service Professors Edit Collaboration Textbook

Two faculty members in Old Dominion University's School of Public Service have edited a new book on the evolving public administration theory of collaboration.

The book, "Advancing Collaboration Theory: Models, Typologies and Evidence," was edited by John Morris, professor and chair of public service; and Katrina Miller-Stevens, assistant professor of nonprofit management and public policy.

Morris and Miller-Stevens, both faculty members in Old Dominion's Strome College of Business, have published numerous articles on collaboration theory, which has gained prominence in the study of government, the public sector service and nonprofits in the past three decades.

In a testimonial, Steven Ott of the University of Utah said the book is needed because of the key role of collaboration in the theory and practice of public administration and non-profit management.

"It is way too tempting to simply assume that when two organizations are linked within or across sectors, they will work together - collaboratively and effectively for the public good," Ott wrote. The book is divided into three parts - framing and definition, advancing theory and collaboration in action. Each contains chapters written by public administration and nonprofit management scholars nationwide.

Beginning with an exploration of collaboration's current interpretations, the book introduces new theories and frameworks that help explain elements and processes of collaboration. The book concludes with case studies that illustrate collaboration's practical use.
