Summer Art Exhibit to Explore Violence of Slavery, Jim Crow

The exhibit Slavocracy, by graphic designer Frank DeBose, will be on display May 20 to Aug. 21 at Old Dominion University's Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries.

In his exhibit, which is free and open to the public, DeBose, an associate professor at The Art Institute of Chicago, explores the violence of slavery and Jim Crow by creating elegant timelines, charts, graphs and three-dimensional works. The tension created between image and content throws into sharp relief a history too often hidden from view.

An opening reception will be held May 20 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries are open Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. For more gallery information, call 757-683-6271 or visit the Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries website.
