R. Bruce Bradley '78
R. Bruce Bradley was appointed to the Board of Visitors on July 1, 2016, by Governor Terry McAuliffe, and was reappointed to a second four-year term on July 1, 2020, by Governor Ralph Northam. He is currently serving as Rector of the Board and as Chair of the Board's Executive Committee and Presidential Evaluation & Compensation Committee.
Bradley received his M.B.A. degree from Old Dominion University in 1978 and a B.S. in Business Administration from Villanova University in 1971. He is a graduate of Leadership Hampton Roads (1992) and Leadership Greensboro (1990). He served in the U. S. Navy from 1971-1974.
Prior to his retirement, Bradley was President of Landmark Publishing Group and Executive Vice President of Landmark Media Enterprises, LLC. He was also former President and Publisher of The Virginian-Pilot after serving as vice president and general manager and director of advertising. He held leadership positions at the Greensboro News & Record and the Roanoke Times & World News. He was also an adjunct professor at Old Dominion University.
Bradley is past chair of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and the ACCESS College Foundation. He also served on the Boards of Directors of the Newspaper Association of America, the American Press Institute and the National Maritime Center; Old Dominion University College of Business Executive Advisory Council (chair, 2003-2007); United Way of South Hampton Roads (chair, 2004); Hampton Roads Partnership (co-chair, 2000-2003); Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce (chair, 1997-1999); YMCA of South Hampton Roads (chair, 1997-1999); Kids Voting Virginia (chair, 1997-1998); Family & Children's Services, Greensboro (chair, 1990); Old Dominion Advertising Conference (chair, 1981); Mid-Atlantic Advertising & Marketing Executives (president, 1991-1992); Roanoke Valley Arts Council (president, 1986); Family & Children's Services of Roanoke Valley (president, 1985-1986); Roanoke Valley Advertising Federation (president, 1981-1982); Sales & Marketing Executives of the Roanoke Valley (president, 1980-1981); and Landmark Toastmasters, Norfolk (president, 1975).
Bradley and his wife Lilly reside in Virginia Beach and have two grown children, Amanda Gift and Zach Bradley.
