Recommended Qualifications and Competencies for Members of the Old Dominion University Board of Visitors

The Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University proposes to the Governor that he/she seek to achieve a balance of the following qualifications and competencies among the members of the Board of Visitors when considering appointments to the institution's governing board:

Members with the ability to dedicate the necessary amount of time and energy to fulfilling Board duties, while recognizing the Board's policy-driven role and its responsibility for hiring and evaluating the President.

Members with understanding of the formal and informal structure of Virginia state government.

Members with acumen and understanding of the formal and informal structure of Virginia's higher education system and the major issues in higher education within the Commonwealth and across the nation.

Members with an understanding of how to best oversee a comprehensive research university, including the implications of global interdependence and importance of global engagement.

Members with business acumen and experience running a large, complex organization.

Members with an understanding of the broad-based role of the changing academic curriculum, including modes of delivery beyond the traditional classroom setting.

Members with respect for diversity and the role it plays in higher education.

Members with the ability to communicate effectively.

Members capable of being proponents and supporters of Old Dominion University.
