Energy Engineering (Minor)

Description

What is energy-engineering at ODU like?

This interdisciplinary Minor is for students who would like to learn about energy engineering fundamentals, socio-environmental impacts of energy systems, and novel energy engineering technologies. The Minor will enhance their abilities to integrate knowledge from different disciplines with concepts used in energy engineering and offer the students the opportunity to be recognized for study in this growing interdisciplinary field.

Program Highlights

What makes energy-engineering at ODU unique?

  • Expose students to energy engineering fundamentals and a system approach to energy systems and their sociological, economic, and environ-mental impacts

  • Enhance students’ ability to intergrate knowledge in relation to various energy technologies and primary resource vectors such as fossil, nuclear and renewables

  • Expose students to novel energy engineering concepts and technologies such as smart grids, integrated generation systems, storage, transmissions and distribution systems

  • Foster a better understanding of public policies to provide greater momentum to the energy industry

Courses

What are some courses offered in energy-engineering at ODU?

CEE 459:
Biofuels Engineering

Course covers the overview of renewable energy sources; fundamentals of biofuels; biomass and types of biomass |e.g., woody biomass, forest residues, agricultural residues, energy crops); composition of lignocelluloses |cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin); biomass conversion technologies; thermochemical, supercritical water, and biochemical conversion processes; types of biofuels from biomass; liquid fuels |bioethanol, bio-oil, biocrude, and hydrocarbons); gaseous fuels |synthesis gas, hydrogen, biodiesel); solid fuels |biochar, torrefied biomass); biodiesel from vegetable oils, algae to biofuels; value-added processing of biofuel residues; economic and environmental assessments; policies and future R and D. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor.

ECE 303:
Introduction to Electrical Power

AC steady state power, single-phase and three-phase networks, electric power generation, transformers, transmission lines, electric machinery and the use of power. Energy resources, power plants, renewable energy, electric safety. |offered fall, summer) Prerequisites: a grade of C or better in ECE 201.

CET 355:
Sustainable Building Practices

The course will examine industry trends in sustainable building practices. It explores the green building strategies used in the design and construction of sustainable buildings. The role of site selection, water efficiency, energy, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality will be explored. Prerequisites: Junior standing.

Requirements

What are the requirements to apply for energy-engineering at ODU?

Students entering the Minor program in energy-engineering should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Undergraduate Admission)

Students who wish to take the Minor will submit online registration form  and then meet with the Minor Advisor, Dr. Sandeep Kumar, to present the list of courses that they wish to take from the list and courses from their Major that they wish to apply to the Minor requirements subject to the advisor's approval. A plan of work form will be completed that lists the courses that will be applied to the Minor requirements. The students Academic Advisor will declare the Minor in Degree Works and report the completion of the Minor to the registrar.

  • For completion of the Minor, students must have a minimum overall grade point average of 2.00 in all courses required for the minor exclusive of pre-requisites. At least six (6) hours of the required twelve (12) must be taken through courses offered by Old Dominion University

Note that any class taken prior to the official start date of the Minor that is or later becomes an approved or required Minor class can be credited toward the student's Minor requirements.
