Our Programs
The Institute of Asian Studies initiates and coordinates the development and operation of special programs, and administers a minor and major in Asian Studies. It also explores and maintains cooperative relationships with higher education institutions and other organizations within the United States and throughout Asia in order to enhance Asian Studies programs in this university and region.
Asian Studies (B.A.)
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Asian Studies requires a total of 120 credit hours. In addition to the requirements of the General Education, 30-35 hours at the upper level are required, including the Capstone Seminar in Asian Studies (ASIA 461W) and Research Methods (HIST 201, POLS 308, SOC337, PSYC 317, or ECON 400).
The remaining 18-24 credit hours should be taken from the following list of the courses. At least one of these courses must be selected from the Humanities and one from Social Sciences. At least 1 course must be writing intensive. Additional courses may be approved by the program director.
Common Minors
Only 300-level and above courses (not counting research methods courses) can be used toward an Asian Studies minor or toward fulfilling the eectoves requirement of the Asian Studies major.
The Asian Studies Minor requires a minimum of 12 credits at the 300-400 level. Refer to the list below for the classes that qualify for the minor.

A program in Asian Studies is of immediate value for developing or enhancing students' knowledge of Asia, the site of several of the world's greatest civilizations. It has further practical benefits for anyone who plans to work in Asia or pursue a career dealing with Asian-American people, business, tourism, international communications, education, journalism, social work, etc. Some examples of career opportunities for Asian Studies majors and minors include:
