Student interaction spaces with tables, couches, whiteboards and plenty of charging outlets are located throughout the building. They provide areas for students to meet before, between and after lectures, labs, recitations and one-on-one help sessions. Photo chuck Thomas/ODU

On the north end of the building is a unique periodic table that has images of many of the molecules invented by the ODU professors. The table serves as a way to donate to the school. The names of ODU patrons are engraved on many of the elements, and the money raised funds an endowment to allow all undergraduate researchers to present their results at national meetings. Immerse yourself on a journey through space and time in the breathtaking, 122-seat planetarium. From the comfort of a plush, reclined seat, you'll feel like you're flying through Earth's atmosphere to the far reaches of the universe. Photo Chuck Thomas/ODU

Instrumentation teaching labs have glass hoods that allow instructors and teaching assistants to have complete visibility of students at all times, further enhancing security and safety. The Michael and Kimthanh Lê Digital Theater and Planetarium will host chemistry and biochemistry lectures as well as explorations into the universe on one of the largest planetarium domes in the state. Photo Chuck Thomas/ODU

Throughout the building, chemistry concepts are displayed obviously and subtly. Among the most obvious is the lighting shaped in a vast array of organic molecules. Less obvious are the line spectra (unevenly spaced series of vertical lines) that the unique quantized energy states of each chemical element generate. These line spectra are everywhere in the building. Just look closely at the floors, walls, ceiling tiles and bricks. Photo Chuck Thomas/ODU

The Chemistry Building is being funded by a state bond issue, in part intended to increase the number of students in STEM-H (science, technology, engineering, math and health sciences).
