Finance 210: Personal Financial Literacy

This course is about you. You will be in-charge of your financial life. How you manage your finances over your lifetime will affect your life and lifestyle.

Each of us has a unique set of personal goals and objectives. The path to your goals is loaded with land mines that can derail your journey. Learn what they might be and how to protect yourself from them. The better educated you are as a consumer, the better and more satisfying the outcomes.

Interactive discussions are encouraged. There will be cases where students have had an experience with a particular topic or topics. When appropriate, I want students to share their experience, the good and the bad, with the rest of the class.

I think of this course as combining financial literacy, psychology, and financial planning.

Financial literacy is the encyclopedic list of topics and terminology. Psychology relates to how we incorporate behavioral economics and finance into our daily life for better decisions. Remember, you can learn all the terminology, but, you can't protect you from yourself. Financial planning is a developing a coherent program to achieve financial success based on an understanding of the implications of the choices we make.

We use an interactive text that can be accessed by computer or phone.

Richard Thaler won Noble Prize in Economics 2017 for his work on behavioral economics and his book Nudge.
