HESI

HESI A2 Assessment Test

The HESI A2 Assessment Test is a requirement for all students applying to Old Dominion University's School of Nursing, as well as many other nursing programs. To align the requirements of other nursing programs locally and around the country, all sections of the exam are included in our HESI test.

PLEASE NOTE: The ODU School of Nursing accepts transcripts for the HESI A2 that have been completed within the past five years. If applying to other institutions, check directly with them as to how long scores are valid for.

The HESI A2 Exam consists of seven academic exams and two personal assessment (not scored) exams:

  1. Reading Comprehension: Provides scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, including identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, and making logical inferences.

  2. Vocabulary & General Knowledge: Tests knowledge of everyday vocabulary terms, as well as vocabulary used in healthcare fields.

  3. Grammar: Assesses knowledge of basic grammar, including parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, commonly occurring grammatical errors and more.

  4. Basic Math Skills: Focuses on math skills needed for healthcare fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures and general math facts.

  5. Biology: Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, photosynthesis and more.

  6. Chemistry: Contains test items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, chemical bonding and more.

  7. Anatomy & Physiology: Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems.

Personal Assessment Areas (not scored):

  1. Personality Profile: Uses concepts related to introversion and extroversion to classify the student's personality style.

  2. Learning Style: Assesses the preferred learning style of the prospective applicant and offers test-taking and study tips suited for that learning style.

The test administration fee is payable via Visa, Discover, American Express, or MasterCard credit or debit card. The testing fee is non-refundable and non-transferrable. Click here to pay your test administration fee and set up your appointment.

After making your testing appointment, you'll need to pay for access to the exam. This payment of $54.00 is made through Evolve, the company behind the HESI exam. Please note that if you do not have an Evolve account, you must create one. Also note that you MUST remember your Evolve password when you come to test. The Credentialing Center cannot access or reset password.

If you have any issues making this payment on the Evolve website, please contact Evolve. Payments must be paid before arriving, and cannot be made in the Credentialing Center office.

Distance HESI Testing is available for students outside of the Hampton Roads area interested in taking the ODU HESI A2 Assessment.

  • Bring an appropriate official photo ID (valid state-issued ID, military ID or passport)
  • Bring your Evolve username and password

Once you complete the HESI A2 Exam, you will receive a printed score report. If applying to ODU, the School of Nursing requests a copy of your score report with your application. Pre-admissions aptitude testing (HESI A2). ODU Preference is given to students with a minimal score of 80. Applicants may repeat the test twice within a 12 month period.

Refund Policy

Individuals who fail to reschedule by the registration deadline (at least 48 hours before the scheduled appointment) or fail to show up for their appointment will need to schedule another testing appointment and repay the test administration fee. Refunds will only be issued (minus a $3.50 fee charged by RegisterBlast) if notice is given in writing (e-mail credentialingcenter@odu.edu) at least 48 hours before your appointment time.
