Dean's Message

Welcome to the Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University

Jeffrey Fergus

At the Batten College, we provide experiences and support to empower students from all backgrounds to secure and thrive in rewarding careers in engineering and technology. Students work in a range of areas, such as building and testing autonomous vehicles, developing life-saving biomedical devices, planning coastal resilience strategies, researching human-robot interaction and building small satellites to be launched into space.

The student experience is enhanced by the range of perspectives in our diverse student body, which includes 40% from minority populations and approximately 15% who are active-duty military or veterans. Over 35% of our incoming freshmen are first-generation students.

Our location at the crossroads of maritime, military, and industrial hubs in metropolitan Norfolk, Virginia, provides unique opportunities for student and faculty engagement with organizations such as NASA Langley Research Center, Newport News Shipbuilding, Port of Virginia, STIHL Inc. and the U.S. Navy.

More than half of our graduates remain in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and one-third remain in the Hampton Roads area, making Batten College a mainstay of the region’s workforce.

I invite you to learn more about our undergraduate and graduate programs, either in person, online, or by attending one of our monthly Academic Days.
