Mark Your Naro calendars for the next free Naro Minded film screening! Please join the Libraries for Wild Style at ODU's Michael and Kimthanh Lê Planetarium on Tuesday, November 14.
Celebrate 50 years of Hip-Hop and 40 years of WILD STYLE with Norfolk's very own turntable legend BEESUS THE DJ of It's Fresh Radio and HOT 91.1 FM. With turntables in tow, DJ Bee will join Naro Video Curator Kris King for a workshop and talk on the art scene that took over the world and the film that captured the moment it exploded into the mainstream.
"The original hip-hop movie, WILD STYLE was the first feature film to document the scene's music, break dancing, and street art at its inception. Through the eyes of a subway tagger named Zoro (played by graffiti legend Lee Quiñones) and his encounters with assorted B-boys and -girls, rappers, and fellow artists, we see the vibrant street culture of the Bronx in the early 1980s. Filmed with vivid, semi-documentary authenticity, this extraordinary time capsule boasts appearances by groundbreaking artists like Grandmaster Flash, the Cold Crush Brothers, Lady Pink, Fab 5 Freddy, Busy Bee, and others." - Criterion
