'Continuum: Works by Anne Smith, Melissa Hill and Sarah Irvin' Opens Jan. 14

An exhibit focusing on the intersections of time, space and self in the human experience will open Saturday, Jan. 14 at Old Dominion University's Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries.

"Continuum: Works by Anne Smith, Melissa Hill and Sarah Irvin" features drawings, sculpture and installations in which the artists will investigate how time, space and self interact with and shape one another through the lens of human experience.

"Continuum" will be on display through Sunday, Feb. 19. A free public opening reception will be held on Friday, January 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the lobby of the Galleries. A panel discussion with the artists will precede the reception, from 5 to 6 p.m.

Anne Smith (www.annecsmith.com) is an artist and teacher in Washington. Her work includes drawing, sculpture and printmaking on the themes of home and longing. Smith recently completed a residency at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria. Melissa Hill (www.melissahillart.com) works as an artist and adjunct professor at Old Dominion. She creates large-scale installations intended to transform the space in which they are presented as well as the viewers who encounter them. Hill's art has been in several solo shows and group exhibitions and has been collected internationally. Sarah Irvin (www.sarahirvinart.com) lives and works in Richmond. Her work has appeared in galleries in New York and Washington, among other locations.

The large scale of the works in "Continuum" encourages viewers to relate the artwork to their own bodies and life experiences. Smith considers the space of home as a container for growth and experience, as well as how an individual embeds the structure of home in the mind. Hill explores the idea of a multifaceted self that exists across multiple realities. Irvin investigates the everyday acts of a child in public spaces that produce change and growth for the child and for society.

The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries feature works by nationally and internationally recognized self-taught artists, contemporary artists working in all media, as well as local and regional artists connected with Old Dominion University. The galleries are free and open to the public. The hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.
