Maritime Researchers Receive International Recognition

Two Old Dominion University maritime researchers have recently received international recognition, part of the ongoing legacy of achievement of ODU's Maritime Institute.
ManWo Ng, assistant professor of information technology and decision sciences in Old Dominion's Strome College of Business, has been appointed associate editor of the journal Maritime Policy & Management, the flagship journal of international shipping and port research.
Ng, an expert in maritime logistics and port research, is the only researcher at the academic rank of assistant professor to serve as associate editor for the journal, which is also the leading journal affiliated with the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME), the major international academic organization for maritime researchers.
"It is extraordinary for an assistant professor to be appointed associate editor of an international academic journal," said Wayne Talley, Frederick W. Beazley professor of economics and director of ODU's Maritime Institute.
The appointment reflected Ng's scholarly record of maritime publications in highly ranked academic journals, Talley said.
Talley was recently appointed editor of the four-volume book "Major Works in Maritime Economics," which is being published by Routledge. In November, Talley attended a meeting at the British House of Lords as an invited panelist. The session, under the chairmanship of Lord Michael Ancram, the Marquess of Lothian, discussed the future of maritime shipping under Brexit.
ODU's expertise in port research stretches back decades, in part because of the University's location near a major deep water port, but also because of the work of ODU faculty researchers.
In 2011, IAME ranked Old Dominion eighth in the world in port research over the past 30 years - second only to the University of Washington in the Western Hemisphere.
The association's annual global conference was held in Norfolk in 2014. Co-hosted by ODU, Canada's Dalhousie University and Texas A&M University, the event featured speakers from the Panama Canal Authority and Suez Canal Authority, as well as top executives from the Port of Virginia, Port of New Orleans and Port of Los Angeles, speaking about the future of the expanded Panama Canal.
