Board of Visitors Approves New Data Science and Analytics Master's Program

By Harry Minium

Old Dominion University's Board of Visitors unanimously agreed Wednesday to begin offering a master of science in data science and analytics beginning in the fall of 2019.

The multidisciplinary degree will combine computer science, business, information technology and statistics. Students will gain computational data analysis and business intelligence know-how critical to high-paying careers in research and technology.

The board also approved a bachelor of science in cybersecurity, also to begin in 2019. Both new programs are pending SCHEV approval.

The new program represents an expansion of the cybersecurity bachelor of science in interdisciplinary studies and will be administered by the Center for Cyber Security Education and Research.

To allow students greater flexibility in pursuing their degrees, the cybersecurity program will be offered on campus and online

These new programs are part of the University's commitment to train an educated workforce in key fields of need in Virginia.

The city of Newport News also announced the expansion of a partnership between ODU and LAVLE USA, Inc., which will result in a $12 million Marine Electric Propulsion Simulation Laboratory in downtown Newport News.

The new lab will conduct research in areas such as marine electric propulsion and advanced energy storage, as well as focus on workforce development for shipbuilding and the ship repair industry. The city agreed to provide 1.33 acres of land where the 22,000-square-foot building will be constructed.

The project is an outgrowth of The Virginia Digital Shipbuilding Workforce Program, in which ODU has worked with area defense contractors and shipyards to take shipbuilding design completely digital. It is expected to open in 2020.
