Anne Shumadine, Former Rector and Board of Visitors Member, Dies

Anne B. Shumadine, former rector of Old Dominion's Board of Visitors, died on July 24.
Shumadine was appointed to the Board of Visitors in 1993 and served as rector from 1996 to 1997. She was a former director and board member of Old Dominion's Educational Foundation and served on a number of university committees.
Old Dominion was among countless community institutions that were enriched by Shumadine's expertise as a business owner, attorney, tax and financial advisor and lengthy record of service to the community.
Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick said Shumadine was a devoted leader to the University and also was committed to serving students' needs.
"Anne exemplified what entrepreneurial spirit and public service are all about," said Broderick. "As rector of the University's Board of Visitors and chair of the Educational Foundation, she advanced programs that have made a lasting and positive impact on our students. All of us at Old Dominion are grateful for her dedication to the University and extend our condolences to her family and friends."
Shumadine was founder and chair of Signature Family Wealth Advisors. She was a former rector of the Board of Visitors of Eastern Virginia Medical School, a trustee and president of ACCESS College Foundation, and former trustee of Virginia Wesleyan University and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. She served on the Wellesley College Business Leadership Council.
"Anne Shumadine was an exceptionally talented individual whose heart was as big as Hampton Roads," said James V. Koch, Board of Visitors Professor of Economics and President Emeritus of Old Dominion University. "She was a very perceptive rector with a great sense of public service and a marvelous ability to build coalitions to get things accomplished."
Shumadine earned her bachelor's degree in history from Wellesley College in 1965, where she was a Wellesley Scholar. At 37, she enrolled in the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary. She graduated first in her class in 1983, and was a former editor of the William and Mary Law Review.
She was a member of the American Bar Association, the Virginia Bar Association, the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association, the Planning Committee of the ODU Tax Conference, the Hampton Roads Tax Forum, the Tidewater Estate Planning Council, and the United States Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
In addition to her service to higher education, Shumadine was active in numerous organizations in the Hampton Roads business community including the Tidewater Scholarship Foundation, the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Norfolk Corporation and the United Way of South Hampton Roads.
Shumadine is survived by her husband, Conrad; and two sons, John and Jim. A memorial service was held July 29 at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Norfolk.
