VIDEO: New Program Monarch Sisters Teaches Young Soccer Athletes Core Values

Old Dominion's Women's Soccer recently held a clinic to promote its Monarch Sisters youth soccer initiative.

The five-week program, for girls age 7-11, is held on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. throughout the spring.

Monarch Sisters, sponsored by the 7-Eleven on Powhatan Avenue, is a new program that involves weekly soccer coaching sessions, team-building exercises and games.

During the 90-minute sessions, the girls learn values such as teamwork, diversity, sportsmanship and respect. Each participant is paired with a women's soccer player for mentoring and learning the rules of soccer. The goal of Monarch Sisters is to use soccer as a vehicle to promote enjoyment and networking. Watch the video to see what the young athletes are saying about the program.

Angie Hind, head coach of ODU's Women's Soccer, said it's great way to give back to the University's surrounding communities and give her players an opportunity to volunteer and teach the sport they enjoy.

"We felt like this would be a great idea for young girls to see what it's like to be a student-athlete and embrace their passion for soccer," Hind said. "We always encourage our players to realize their responsibility of serving as role models."
