Big Blue Summer Camp Registration Opens

Old Dominion University offers summer camp programs designed to educate and inspire youth in a variety of academic and extracurricular endeavors serving children in grades K-12. All of the University'scamps provide children with the chance to unwind, explore and experiment, learn and grow, discover new ideas, and work cooperatively with others all while experiencing campus life.

The Big Blue Summer Day camp focuses on helping campers develop friendship skills, independence, teamwork, family citizenship, competence, interest in exploration, responsibility, affinity for nature and confidence in problem solving. Every week campers may participate in the following activities: swimming, rock-wall, arts & crafts, and either a field trip or special program related to the theme of the week. The camp prides itself on providing children with highly motivated and enthusiastic staff who mentor child campers. Staff also must adhere to the American Camp Association's (ACA) camper-to-counselor ratios to ensure appropriate supervision is maintained throughout the duration of the program.

Some of this year's theme weeks for Big Blue Summer Day Camp include:

Weather Camp - June 17-21

What is the weather like out there? We ask this question every day, and the answer determines our choices from the clothes we wear to the sports we play. The weather influences just about everything! Campers will learn about clouds & humidity, sun energy, fronts, mid-latitude cyclones & severe weather, and tornadoes & hurricanes.

Intro to Engineering - June 24-28

Engineers are creative problem solvers, helping to build a better world. This camp will feature engineering programs and activities. Campers ages 6-9 will be introduced to mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. They will construct simple machines with k'nex, create a snap circuit, and learn how coding makes the world run smoothly. Campers ages 10-12 will explore civil, electrical, mechanical, and modeling and simulation engineering. They will engage in hands on activities related to the engineering disciplines lead by faculty and students from ODU's Batten College of Engineering & Technology.

Animal Adventure - July 8-12

Join us at Big Blue for an exciting animal adventure! Campers will get the opportunity to explore some of the wild animals the world has to offer through a variety of activities. Your adventurer will create animal arts and crafts and play many fun games that allow them to unleash their inner beast. The week will include a field trip to the Norfolk Zoo.

Big Blue Island Adventure - July 15-19

Campers will be able to take on the persona of an explorer when they join us for Big Blue Island Adventure Camp. Working with maps and a compass, campers will learn to navigate their way around campus. With exciting games such as "walk the plank" and "shipwrecked", campers will experience a bit of what the "sea" has to offer. Join us for some fun in the sun during island adventure week. This week will include a field trip to the beach.

Winter in July - July 22-26

Holy Humidity - it's HOT outside! What better way to beat the heat than to celebrate winter in July! We will make snow, learn about winter holidays, the Winter Solstice and the aurora borealis. This week we will go ice skating for our field trip!

Spy Camp - July 29-August 2

Does your kid have what it takes to be the next top agent spy? Every day, our spy kids will be given top secret information and their skills will be put to the test. They will learn to communicate through invisible messaging, complete spy training with different training missions, and even crack the code with some secret messages. Spy camp will be a nonstop day full of adventures. This week will include a field trip to LaserQuest or Glo Golf.
