Professor William Judge is co-chair of the conference.
The Department of Management and Entrepreneurship at the Strome College at Business at Old Dominion University will host the sixth annual Conference of the International Corporate Governance Society from Nov. 13 to 15.
Professor William (Bill) Judge was the founding president of this international academic society, and Old Dominion University is the institution that sponsored it.
The conference is intended to provide a forum for international academics, practitioners and doctoral students to showcase and discuss the latest corporate governance research. While the conference theme focuses on environmental sustainability, other issues will be discussed and explored, such as boards of directors, ownership dynamics and the proper role of government and corporate self-responsibility.
It is estimated that more than 100 corporate governance scholars from 38 countries will attend.
"Corporate governance deals with mechanisms used by a society to control corporations so that they serve society well," said Judge, E.V. Williams chair of Strategic Leadership in the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship and co-chair of the conference. "Corporations can be part of the solution to this growing global crisis, and theory and research is needed to understand what works best."
Several departmental faculty are involved in developing the conference program. Professors Elko Klijn and Martin Goossen serve as track chairs. In addition, many doctoral students had their research papers accepted for presentation.
"In today's world, companies are held accountable for all of their actions, especially those that impact the environment," said Jeff Tanner, dean of the Strome College of Business. "Corporate governance is not only critical to the efficient and effective functioning of organizations, but also in solving some of our society's most complex problems. Bill's leadership in bringing this conference to Strome allows Strome and ODU to showcase some of our initiatives to leading scholars while offering our students a great opportunity to develop their research skills."
The inaugural virtual conference will be scheduled on a 24/7 basis to accommodate attendees from all over the world. Included will be research presentations, networking opportunities, distinguished panelists from the United States and Europe, and social activities such as a virtual tour of the Chrysler Museum of Art featuring its environmental sustainability artwork. In addition, Chris Moore, senior scientist from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, will discuss how the organizations works with government and corporations to help improve water quality in the region.
"I am pleased that Strome College of Business is hosting this important international conference," Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Austin Agho said. "Environmental sustainability is one of the areas of strategic focus for the university. I applaud Dr. Bill Judge and the faculty and students in the Department of Management for working hard to make this conference accessible to scholars and students around the world."
