Friday, September 18th Seminar Topic:
SYNTHESIS OF Nb3Sn BY MAGNETRON SPUTTERING FOR SUPERCONDUCTING RADIO-FREQUENCY APPLICATION by Md. Nizam Sayeed, PhD. Candidate in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University
Abstract:
Nb3Sn is considered as an alternative of niobium for superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities for particle acceleration due to its potential to obtain higher quality factors and higher accelerating gradients at a higher operating temperature. At Jefferson Lab, Nb3Sn cavities are coated from Sn vapor diffusion method. Magnetron sputtering is one of the effective alternatives that can be used to fabricate Nb3Sn on SRF cavity surface. Currently, research on the fabrication of Nb3Sn by magnetron sputtering on small substrates are carried out. Md. Nizam will address on the structural, morphological, and superconducting properties of these samples in the presentation.
Bio:
Md. Nizam Sayeed is a foreign student from Bangladesh. He received his bachelor's degree in Applied Physics, Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. He is currently a PhD candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at Old Dominion University. He is conducting research with the Jefferson Lab Nb3Sn Superconducting Radio-Frequency (SRF) research group. His work focuses on the novel thin film growth technique to improve the surface and efficiency of SRF cavities. He is working on the growth of Nb3Sn thin films by magnetron sputtering for its application in SRF cavities.
