Old Dominion University President John R. Broderick will receive the 2021 Individual Darden Award for Regional Leadership from the CIVIC Leadership Institute. Sentara Healthcare was chosen for the Corporate Darden Award.
Recipients of the annual award, established in 2005, are recognized for "demonstrating exceptional leadership in the pursuit of regional cooperation."
CIVIC lauded President Broderick for his governance in transforming ODU into a research leader in the fields "from cybersecurity to bioelectrics, coastal resilience, entrepreneurship and health sciences."
President Broderick's community service and influence in Hampton Roads were also noted, as well as the many regional honors he and First Lady Kate Broderick have received.
"I am honored to receive the Darden Award from CIVIC," President Broderick said. "CIVIC has demonstrated the profound benefits of mentorship, both for the students and the professionals who mentor them. In a similar spirit, Old Dominion has actively pursued partnerships in the public and private sector - from our new Virginia Offshore Wind Landing to our future School of Public Health. I am convinced that the best way to move Hampton Roads and the commonwealth forward is by working together. One of my annual highlights is spending an evening with the scholars and their mentors in my home."
President Broderick will receive the award during a ceremony at the Decker Half Moone Center in Norfolk on Nov. 17.
