The Old Dominion University Alumni Association (ODUAA) will conduct its fifth annual Monarch Cobia Classic fishing tournament from July 14 to 16. Proceeds will benefit the ODUAA Scholarship Fund.
The event, which originated in 2017, is one of three signature fundraising events that the ODUAA organizes annually. The Cobia Classic annually supports 38 students, and to date, more than 400 students have received financial assistance from ODUAA fundraisers.
The first day of the Classic will consist of a captains' meeting, followed by two days of fishing, culminating with a dock party. There will be weigh stations in Virginia Beach and on the Peninsula, and the dock party will be held at Ballyhoos in Virginia Beach. Cash awards will be presented to the top five teams, plus for the heaviest fish and "lucky dog." Teams may consist of up to six anglers.
An "early bird" rate of $400 for team registration is available until July 1. After that date, the registration increases to $450. Sponsorship opportunities are also available with levels ranging from $250-$10,000.
The event continues to grow in popularity. In 2021, the Classic drew its largest attendance with 72 registered boats and 25 event sponsors. Since its inception, it has doubled in size, making it one of the largest cobia tournaments on the East Coast.
