Tyler Vaughan is a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps, and currently stationed at Camp Pendleton, California.

What skills and intellectual experiences did you acquire in your undergraduate program at ODU that have served you well in your subsequent work? Which professors do you remember and why?

Extensive analytical research was possibly the most valuable skill I acquired during my undergraduate program. It has allowed me to look at a situation from all perspectives and plan for multiple contingencies. I have been able, and will continue, to use this in my Marine Corps career in order to make comprehensive and well thought out decisions that would benefit my Marines and assist in the overall unit effectiveness and readiness. Dr. Annette Finley-Croswhite was by far my most memorable professor at Old Dominion. Not only did she display great passion during her lectures, but genuinely cares about every one of her students. She knew what we all were capable of and would accept nothing less than our best work. During the semester she was always available to assist us in any way possible and even after graduating she continues to check up on us and expresses encouragement on our success.

What new books and topics have you explored since leaving ODU? Do you have any plans for future study?

For professional readings, I have acquired more books pertaining to military leadership and tactics, such as "On War" by Carl von Clausewitz and "From the Horse's Mouth" by Major Ted McKeldin. Leisurely, I enjoy historical non-fiction works. Once settled at my next duty station I do plan on working towards my M.A. degree in Museum Studies and possibly a PhD in Ancient History.

Were you in the ODU ROTC program? How did you like it?

I commissioned under the Enlisted Commissioning Program offered by the Marine Corps. However, I occasionally trained with the ODU NROTC Program and found it to be a great experience. I highly recommend the ODU ROTC and NROTC program to anyone thinking about commissioning.

What do you currently enjoy about your service in the United States Marine Corps?

Camaraderie. Despite what occupational specialty someone holds, everyone is a Marine. I have served for 8 years in the Select Reserve, Active Reserves, and Active Duty components and have found that familiar bond with everyone I have come across, who are concerned with your professional and personal growth.

Have you had the opportunity to explore southern California? What are some of your favorite activities and trips there?

My wife, Crystal, and I have lived in southern California for the last 2 years and never ran out of things to do. The area is filled with plenty of attractions, historical landmarks, and weekend excursions. For the most part we enjoy the hiking trails and beaches along the coast.
