More than 70 current and former Old Dominion University faculty members are among the most-cited researchers in the world, according to a Stanford University study.
The study, updated annually since 2019, narrows data on millions of scientists worldwide to identify the top 2% cited in author databases.
For researchers, frequent citation is an indicator of the significance of their findings. As an institution classified as Research 1 by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, ODU occupies the highest level of research universities in the United States. To be considered R1, universities must meet benchmarks across 10 indicators, including research doctorates awarded, total research expenditures, the aggregate level of research activity and the number of research staff.
“Peer-reviewed publications are an enduring measure of a researcher’s ability to advance knowledge, as well as a university’s collective influence on what we know and how we know it. We are proud to have this tangible evidence of the worldwide impact of ODU’s faculty across multiple academic disciplines,” said Morris Foster, vice president of research at Old Dominion University. Foster is among the most-cited over his career for research in medical anthropology.
Researcher John Ioannidis of Stanford University viewed the number of career citations of scholarly articles from the first year of publication to the end of 2021 to assess career impact. The list was compiled based on a Sept. 1, 2022, snapshot of Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature.
The updated list includes two categories: career-long citation impact and current-year impact. Many faculty members are included on both lists.
The first is based on the number of times a scholar's work is cited throughout their career. Sixty ODU faculty were named in such diverse fields as marketing, aerospace engineering, cybersecurity and ocean and earth sciences.
For the current-year impact, 50 ODU faculty representing disciplines such as psychology, civil engineering, exercise science and chemistry were included.
Scientists were classified into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields.
More than 50 ODU faculty were included in the study published in 2021. Asterisks denote current faculty.
