February 7, 2023, 12:30 – 1:45

Perry Library, Rooms 1310-1311 & broadcasted via Zoom

As AI continues to seep into the fabric of higher education from enrollment to alumni relations, its impact is likely to be far-reaching and game-changing. The recent release of ChatGPT, a conversational AI chatbot, generated a mixture of reactions ranging from excitement to worry. While some faculty members welcomed the tool as a powerful addition to improving and personalizing students’ learning, others expressed concerns about its potential negative influence on students’ writing, creativity, and critical-thinking abilities. To reflect on these conflicting perspectives, the CFD, in partnership with the University Libraries, is pleased to invite you to a panel discussion on February 7, 2023, 12:30 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. at the Perry Library, rooms 1310-1311. The panel will also be broadcasted via Zoom:  https://odu.zoom.us/s/93841506838

This Panel aims to explore the opportunities and challenges that AI brings to teaching and learning practices, by discussing the following questions:

  • How is AI reshaping faculty roles and teaching practices?
  • How is AI influencing students’ learning experiences?
  • What is the impact of AI on assessment and academic integrity?
  • What are the opportunities offered by AI to personalize the student learning experience?
  • What are the ethical and technical challenges associated with AI in higher education?
  • How can we harness AI to improve teaching and learning practices?

Moderated by M’hammed Abdous (Center for Faculty Development), the panel consists of four faculty members:

  • Jay O'Toole, Assistant Professor, Management
  • Jeremy Moody, Adjunct Instructor, Philosophy & Religious Studies
  • Kristi Costello, Associate Professor, English
  • Sampath Jayarathna, Assistant Professor, Computer Science

We hope you can attend the event.
