About Big Blue Summer Day Camps

 boys and girls ages 6-12


The ODU Big Blue Summer Camp provides quality programs that develop youth ages six to 12, strengthen and support families, and create health and wellness for all.

We focus on helping campers develop friendship skills, independence, teamwork, family citizenship, competence, interest in exploration, responsibility, affinity for nature and confidence in problem solving.

Every week campers may participate in the following activities:

  • swimming
  • arts & crafts
  • special activities related to the theme of the week

 Additional Requirements

Old Dominion University requires all participants of camps held on University property to be up-to-date on all immunizations per VDH school guidelines.

 Camp Cost

Monarch Big Blue Day Camps: $325/week

  • Includes daily lunch and all program materials, unless otherwise specified.
  • Prices may vary for certain camp weeks.
Member & Military Discount

A $25 discount is offered for members of the Student Recreation Center and active-duty military (unless otherwise noted with specific camps).

Multi-Sibling Discount

The first child pays the full rate, then $25 discount is offered for each additional child per week (unless otherwise noted with specific camps). All campers must be registered for the same week of camp.

Refund Policy

Refunds, minus the $25.00 non-refundable deposit, will be issued for cancellations received 31 or more days prior to the first day of the enrolled camp session. No refunds will be issued if the cancellation is 30 or less days prior to the first day of the enrolled camp session. Funds may be applied to a different camp session within the same summer. Neither refunds nor credit will be issued for camper absences (including illness), non-participation in activities, or inclement weather closings.





CAMP STAFF

We take pride in providing highly motivated and enthusiastic staff who will mentor your child. Candidates must meet strict qualifications that meet and often exceed licensing guidelines. All staff must pass a criminal background check and a US Department of Justice national sex-offender background check.

Our staff participate in several trainings, including but not limited to: Child Abuse Recognition & Prevention training, Mandatory Reporter training, American Red Cross ® First Aid/CPR/AED training, EMAT training, and OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen training. In addition, staff are trained on Bully Recognition & Prevention techniques, and Positive & Effective Discipline techniques.

As an American Camp Association ® accredited camp, we adhere to ACA's camper-to-counselor ratios to ensure that appropriate supervision is maintained throughout the duration of the program. The ODU Recreation & Wellness Assistant Director of Summer Camps is Jean Mcclellan-Holt.

Stihl Field Trip

  Tidewater Writing Camp

June 27-July 1 - When Worlds Collide
From SpongeBob SquarePants to Maleficent, our most beloved books and shows are teeming with the most lovable and hilarious (or brilliant and evil) characters out there. In this camp, we will write stories inspired by the characters and settings of your favorite books and movies! Campers will learn about writing consistent characters, developing imaginative plots, and writing dialogue. Writing projects will be published and shared on an online platform. (Grades 2-5).

July 25-29 - Dramatic Scene Writing: Tele-Me All About It
Do you have an evil long-lost twin who tried to ruin your life after waking up in the hospital and recovering from the amnesia they fell victim to while working undercover with a double-crossing jewel thief? No? Do you want to write a story of one? Campers will write their own scenes full of wild plot twists and out-of-this-world outrageous characters based on their favorite television shows! Young writers will create multiple characters, build vocabulary, and write dialogue. At the end of the week, campers will have the opportunity to perform scenes in front of a live audience! (Grades 2-5).

Monarch Culinary Camp

  MC2 – Monarch Culinary Camp

July 11-15 - Cooking & Baking for ages 6-8
July 18-22 - Cooking & Baking for ages 9-12

Trusted culinary professionals will teach your rising Pastry Chef how to prepare a number of delectable desserts and snacks in ODU state-of-the-art building, Broderick Dining Commons. Students will learn easy to make desserts with minimal electric tools and minimal messes enabling them to repeat desserts at home. Lessons on healthy choices and portioning when it comes to snacking. Best of all they bring home desserts for you to try! Each camper will receive a camp swag bag to use while at camp and to take home at the end.
