October is recognized as Depression Awareness Month and in the College of Sciences a new Wellness Check-In service has been set-up in the Math and Science Resource Center (MSRC) to help Monarchs navigate these uncertain times. "I hope that our students will gain the necessary tools and resources to help cope with current issues and stressors in light of the COVID-19 pandemic," said Andrea Stephens, MSRC Manager. With the new wellness check-in service, Stephens will provide students with short term support and navigation to help balance school, work, family-life, and, self-care tips. The MSRC Wellness Check-In is a free service created to provide undergraduate students with support during these uncertain times. The goals of this service are to improve the student's overall well-being as well as provide them with necessary tools and resources to help cope with current stressors.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to complete three 30-minute sessions throughout the semester by appointment only. These sessions will be held using the virtual on-line tool doxy.me or by telephone. Group sessions and webinars may be added throughout the semester. This service is provided Mondays 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesdays 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Thursdays 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Students may also voice their own concerns during these sessions. Issues that are appropriate to discuss include:

  • COVID-19 Anxiety Assessment
  • Coping with current issues or stressors, particularly in light of the coronavirus pandemic
  • School, work, and family life balance, especially given the current context
  • Self-care in terms of your work, school, and personal life
  • Navigating relationships with family, friends, and others
  • Developing interpersonal skills, particularly through the use of technology
  • Professional goals and career related issues
  • Dealing with disappointments or anxiety
  • Developing strengths, resources, and goals
