This non-degree graduate program prepares you for VA Mathematics Specialist (MSP) endorsement. Your Virginia license and mathematics endorsements determine K-5 or K-8 MSP eligibility. This program is offered in partnership with the College of Sciences, Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Program is designed for teachers with a strong interest in teacher leadership and mathematics and at least three years of successful teaching.

Program has a strong emphasis on studying K-8 mathematics to improve mathematical understanding and making connections within and across grade levels.

Program affords learner–centric “doing” and teaching of mathematics to develop pedagogical and andragogical approaches for facilitating learning.

Program develops teacher leaders who value diverse learners and support their ways of knowing by using equitable approaches that utilize the mathematics process and practice standards to reach ALL learners.

Kindergarten Teachers, Except Special Education
Teach elemental natural and social science, personal hygiene, music, art, and literature to kindergarten students. Promote physical, mental, and social development. May be required to hold State certification.
Elementary School Teachers, Except Special Education
Teach students basic academic, social, and other formative skills in public or private schools at the elementary level.
Middle School Teachers, Except Special and Career/Technical Education
Teach students in one or more subjects in public or private schools at the middle, intermediate, or junior high level, which falls between elementary and senior high school as defined by applicable laws and regulations.
Requirements
Candidates must:

Have 3 years of successful classroom experience in teaching mathematics;

Hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college/university;

Hold the Virginia Collegiate Professional License or an equivalent license from another state.

Have an undergraduate grade point average of 2.80 and an average of 3.00 in the major; and

Submit an application for graduate studies.
