The curriculum for the Master of Science program is developed around one's interests such as: botany, ecology, immunology, infectious diseases, marine biology, microbiology, physiology, reproductive biology, systematic biology, and zoology. In addition, we have the Kaplan Orchid Conservatory and excellent opportunities for research and instruction off-campus at field research sites including: Blackwater Ecological Preserve, Virginia Coast Reserve-Long Term Ecological Research Site, Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences Eastern Shore Marine Laboratory, and other regional agencies and facilities.

Many pertinent graduate courses are offered for the Master of Science in Biology programs that can be applied toward the degree requirements. A program of study is developed by the student with approval of advisory committee and the Graduate Program Director.

Master of Science – Biology: Microbiology and Immunology Concentration

MS Biology Program of Study Form - Microbiology & Immunology

For declaring a program of study in the Masters of Biological Sciences for students who matriculate in the program beginning fall 2018. This form is used for MS in Biology and MS in Biology with a concentration in Microbiology and Immunology.

Master of Science – Biology: One Health Concentration

The One Health concentration is for students in the MS program that have a specific interest in aspects of the interdisciplinary One Health paradigm, a strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in aspects of health for humans, animals and the environment. The concentration will introduce students to the concepts of One Health and their application. Students will be admitted to the concentration after selection of their guidance committee and approval of their program of study.

Assistantships/Scholarships

  • Graduate Teaching Assistantships are awarded on an annual basis and includes a stipend; and when possible, tuition may be part of the award.
  • Graduate Research Assistantships may be provided by individual faculty from their grants and contracts.
  • The Virginia S. Bagley Endowed Scholarship is made possible by Mrs. Bagley's estate and is awarded to a graduate student in the Department of Biological Sciences.
  • The Harold G. Marshall and Vivian J. Marshall Scholarship in Biology is awarded to a full-time graduate student who demonstrates scholarship and/or service in the area of Biological Science with a specific concentration in ecological areas.

Tuition Support

  • Tuition Support is awarded each semester and in the summer session with deadlines announced in advance. Awards are made based on student performance and need and may cover only a portion or all tuition costs.
