Welcome to the Batten College of Engineering and Technology!

I would like to welcome you to the Batten College of Engineering & Technology.

The college has 2,400 undergraduate students and 800 graduate students and offers eight undergraduate majors, 19 minors and over 30 graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels across six departments. Our student body is truly diverse and includes a 27% minority population. Over 44% of our freshmen are first-generation students. We also boast a 12% military/veteran student population in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET), the highest in Virginia.

We encourage big ideas and creative thinking as we help students discover new ways to solve real-world problems in a wide range of fields. Our more than 100 full time faculty members are engaged in cutting edge research and innovation. From microsystems to battling cancer; smart transportation to homeland security; renewable energy and resilience to marine engineering; plasma to nanomaterials; cybersecurity to machine learning, artificial intelligence, data science and modeling and simulation, BCET's research programs greatly contribute to the regional, national, and global prosperity of humanity.

Our faculty are consistently recognized as Fulbright Scholars, ONR and AFSOR Summer Research Fellows, and many have been selected and recognized as fellows in their field's professional societies. Most recently, eight Batten College professors were among the top 2% most-cited scientists worldwide.

Throughout the recent pandemic, the Batten College of Engineering and Technology continued to thrive and grow. In 2020, we opened the multidisciplinary School of Cybersecurity, and added a new 7,000-square-foot Engineering Makerspace and Invention Center. A new undergraduate major in modeling and simulation was introduced in 2021. Our research expenditure has increased 40% since 2017.

I hope you all will find our BCET family of students, faculty and staff welcoming as ever as we tackle the challenges due to COVID-19 and look for opportunity to grow.

To my colleagues, it is my pleasure to serve as your interim dean. To our students, I wish you all well and know that my office is here to assist as you pursue your path to achieving your engineering or engineering technology degree.

To the prospective students and guests, I invite you to learn more about the Batten College of Engineering and Technology as you browse these pages.
