**Abstract:**

Explore the mysteries of the subtropical ocean gyres, which cover ~70% of Earth’s surface. These vital ecosystems play a crucial role in carbon cycling and climate regulation. Matt Church will discuss his decades of research in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, focusing on the distinct functioning of its two-layer habitat. Discover how nitrogen supply and iron availability influence phytoplankton dynamics and biogeochemical processes in these vast oceans.
