The International Initiatives area represents OIR via networks with regional and national counterparts in the field of international education and serve on university committees that focus on international themes and issues.
Current Workshops/Presentations
As members of an inclusive global community, it is important to acknowledge the fact our citizenship identities go beyond geographical borders and passports. This interactive presentation provides an engagement opportunity with international and domestic students. The workshop will support space for discussion, promotion of cultural competencies by learning how to be an effective global citizen.
What does it mean to get along with other people, especially those who are different than you and have different beliefs than you? Intercultural competence is key to engaging with others. Intercultural competence and communication are something one will learn through practice. It includes understanding ourselves as well as others. Participants will have an opportunity to discover and demystify cultural similarities and differences as well as discuss ways to create and maintain respectful relationships.
Understanding the International Student Community Challenge and Success Learn and understand the current international student community and their experience as an international student in the U.S. based on statistical information and program assessment. The presenters will share fundamentals and strategies that contribute to international students' sense of belonging and academic success. Discuss ways in which faculty, administrators, and staff can create an inclusive environment for international students to connect and engage them both inside and outside of the classroom, and how to support, challenge, and empower them to take ownership of their learning, experience, and personal development.
