ODU’s Third Annual 3-Minute-Thesis Competition set for Nov. 21

Old Dominion University's Graduate School will host its third annual 3-Minute-Thesis (3MT) competition Nov. 21 at the University Theatre.

Students have three minutes to present their scholarship in such a way that a general audience understands and appreciates its importance and achievement.

A reception begins at 5 p.m., with the competition following from 6 to 8 p.m. Barbara Hamm Lee, owner of Sharing Info, Inc., and host of WHRO's Another View, is the emcee. She is joined by three VIP judges from the community who bring diverse academic backgrounds and expertise to their evaluations of the students.

Graduate students representing a wide range of advanced degrees (at both doctoral and master's levels) are competing for a $1,000 first prize, $750 second prize and $500 "people's choice" award (the audience will choose who wins the $500). The first-place winner will represent ODU at a regional competition hosted by the Council of Southern Graduate Schools in March in Birmingham, Ala.

The competitors are:

  • Jafar Alabdullah, Ph.D., health services research
  • Mahesh Banda, Ph.D., engineering - mechanical engineering
  • Melissa Colangelo, M.S., psychology
