Located on the campus of Old Dominion University, the English Language Center (ELC) provides innovative and high-quality English language instruction to multilingual students, researchers, and community members in the Hampton Roads region and beyond.
The ELC's credit-bearing courses are available to any admitted multilingual undergraduates and graduates who want to strengthen their skills by taking courswork in English for Academic Purposes. We also offer Monarch English Transition Programs to conditionally-admitted graduate and undergraduate to help students move into the academic degree programs faster without having to take any additional standardized proficiency exams.
Our non-credit, Intensive English Program courses are availble to non-degree seeking students on a full- or part-time basis who want to improve their English proficiency for academic, personal, or professional reasons. We also offer a non-credit English Conversation course online to our community.
In addition, the ELC offers customized special programs to meet the language and culture goals for groups or partners around the world and at home. As part of our mission to celebrate linguistic and cultural diveristy on campus, we also coordinate the Conversation Partner Program by matching international and/or multilingual students with American students, scholars, faculty, and/or alumni for conversation and cultural exchange.
Conditional Admission to Academic Programs
Old Dominion University offers conditional admission to undergraduate programs and certain graduate programs. Students can be conditionally admitted to Old Dominion University prior to satisfying the university's English proficiency requirement. Conditionally-admitted students may enroll in the English Language Center's Intensive English Program or the Monarch English Transition (MET) Program.
