The College of Health Sciences has several affiliated labs exploring exercise science. The labs provide training and research opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students. They are also a key community resource helping area residents, from elite athletes to seniors, improve their physical abilities and achieve a better quality of life.
Faculty and students contribute to the knowledge base in physical therapy, athletic training and related disciplines using state of the art facilities.
The HPL improves the scientific understanding of human movement using physiological measurement tools. We teach students why and how to use these tools in clinical and practical settings. We also provide a regional community resource for body composition and other physiologic testing.
The Cardiometabolic Laboratory is located in the Student Recreation Center and a part of the College of Health Sciences. Our laboratory investigates the impact of physical activity or inactivity on cardiometabolic health in humans. We have multiple ongoing projects in healthy young subjects, older adults, and pregnant women.
The Neuromechanics Laboratory is used to perform interdisciplinary research involving neuromuscular biomechanics. Research studies questions relating to biomechanics and neuromuscular control using a combination of approaches involving kinetic, kinematic, and electromyographic analyses.
WIRC offers two supervised, affordable, and individualized exercise programs for older adults. Participants in the T.E.M.P.O. and Forever Fit programs can improve their quality of life through increased strength, increased aerobic endurance, and improved balance.
