About

Old Dominion University is committed to leveraging AI for positive societal impact by integrating AI into its operations, with a focus on ethical AI to enhance human capabilities, foster innovation and prepare its community for the future of work.

While AI and its evoling applications and use cases may be compelx, our approach is quite simple. ODU approaches AI thoughtfully, through a centralized, collaborative effort – bringing together experts from across the university. We are navigating this space intentionally across three core areas: Research, Teaching and Learning, and Operations.

Guiding Principles

The integration of AI doesn’t replace humans. The integration of AI into our systems can improve lives by enhancing human capabilities through a high-tech, high-touch approach, shaping personalized learning and advancing educational impacts through data-driven insights.

As a public, state-funded institution, we approach ethics multifacetedly. The integration of ethical AI into our society requires formative discovery and thoughtful decision making to build regulatory frameworks to ensure intellectual property and human rights are an inherent part of AI’s applications.

The very nature of an academic institution is fragmented – one university split into colleges, departments and programs. But, at ODU, we see the approach and adoption to AI being most effective when it’s centralized. Our AI expertise and projects are housed with the Office of Digital Transformation and Technology.

The applications of artificial intelligence should be rooted in real-life challenges. These challenges should be what informs the utilization and integration of AI in our societies. Our faculty and researchers find ways to use AI in practical ways to create efficiencies and to support our communities.
