About Course Reserves

Overview of Course Reserve Service

The Libraries offers traditional course reserve service. Books from the Libraries collections and personal copies of materials may be placed on reserve for students to access during library hours. Books not in the collection may be ordered to be placed on reserve. All reserve content is subject to copyright restrictions (see Copyright Guidelines).

Faculty are asked to submit materials for reserve at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester. A minimum of seven days is required by the library before materials submitted for reserve should be assigned by instructors. Submissions after the beginning of a semester are processed as quickly as possible.

Reserve materials are intended to support current courses. At the end of each semester, faculty will be emailed about whether the materials are needed for the upcoming semester.

Submitting a Course Reserve

Please use this form to submit a request for placing books owned by the libraries and/or personal copies owned by instructors on reserve at the Perry Library Help Desk. For reserves in the Hofheimer Art Library or Diehn Music Library, consult the staff at those branch libraries. If you have questions about submitting a request, email circ1@odu.edu.

Personal copies of materials to be placed on reserve may be brought to the Perry Library Help Desk or mailed via campus mail at least two weeks prior to being added to courses. Address: Learning Commons, Perry Library, Room 1307, Attention: Frances Everette-Gayther.

If you would like to request the Old Dominion University Libraries purchase an eBook or print book for course reserves, please submit the Book Purchase Request Form, and select the preferred format. For questions, please contact Tracey Bowry, Acquisitions Coordinator, at tbowry@odu.edu.

Remember to consult the Copyright Guidelines before submitting reserve requests.

Timelines

  • Please submit materials at least two weeks prior to the beginning of the semester.
  • Please wait until you receive confirmation that processing is complete before assigning reserve materials to students. Factors that can delay the processing of reserve requests (e.g. a book needs to be recalled, a book is missing, a patron has a book and has yet to return the book, etc.) are sometimes unavoidable.
  • Please provide dates on the syllabus when the material is required for the course.
  • Submissions made after the beginning of the semester are processed as quickly as possible.

Locating Reserve Materials

To retrieve reserve items, use Monarch OneSearch and limit your search to Course Reserves. Note the call number of the desired item in the results list of your search and request it at the Help Desk.
