Mission Statement
ODU's MA in English Program presents a full complement of opportunities in literary studies, technical writing, composition and rhetoric, and teacher training. Our faculty, due to their eclectic areas of expertise, offer unique learning experiences in areas like gaming, web design, environmental sustainability, Native American literature, and ethnic and gender diversity. Faculty take an engaged and hands-on approach to teaching, creating ways to extend the classroom into the community through programs like Humanities Behind Bars which brings literary studies into Norfolk prisons, our Green Spaces initiative that harnesses current environmental discourse into strategies for urban regeneration, studies in archival research that invite students to unlock local narratives in regional archives, and much more.
Class schedules offer flexibility for complicated modern lives as well as manageable classroom sizes and on-line options. Whether you are looking for a professional leg up or simply wish to continue your education, a Master's degree in English at ODU promises in-depth exploration of critical discourses that harness the force of language, technology, and literature. We are dedicated to a culture of learning--the cultivation of essential skills rooted in ethical commitments that will prepare students for employment and leadership positions in the 21st century.
