Confidential Document Shredding Services

The ODU Recycling Department offers confidential document shredding services to businesses and residents of our campus community. The paper shredding program is staffed by Facilities Management personnel and carried out with secure transfer and processing.

On Earth Day in April, everyone is asked to bring their documents to the Support Service Division's Recycling Facility at 865 West 39th Street.

To make disposal simple for you, we will have a pick-up service available for the campus community. Please call us (757-683-3005) or e-mail us (hlogan@odu.edu) to schedule a pick-up.

Staples, binder clips and metal clips may be left on the documents. After the paper is shredded, it is bundled for reuse in the paper recycling industry.

What Documents Should I Shred?

You hear advice all the time that you should shred sensitive documents to reduce your risk of identity theft. However, what exactly are "sensitive documents," and are there some you should keep for a while before destroying them?

In general, you should shred documents that contain any of the following:

  • Account numbers
  • Passwords
  • PINs
  • Signatures
  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
