Waterfront & Pier Policy

Your health and safety at Old Dominion is our highest priority. Find out about services that can help keep all Monarchs at the top of their game!

ODU is proudly located along the banks of the historic Elizabeth River, allowing the University to offer its students, faculty, and staff access to ODU Waterfront venues, which include:

  • Whitehurst Beach
  • Courage Miller Partners Challenge Course
  • Sailing Center Boardwalk and Pier

Please note: Waterfront areas are open from sunrise to sunset unless otherwise authorized by ODU Facilities Management. Additionally, there is no fishing permitted from the pier or boardwalk.

CAUTION: Please understand that the water around the pier and boardwalk is shallow. At low tide there may only be one (1) foot of water and at high tide only three (3) feet of water. Absolutely no jumping or diving into the water from the pier or boardwalk is permitted.

ODU Guest Policy

Use of the Waterfront venues is limited to ODU students, faculty, staff, and their guests. Only these individuals are considered to have permission to use the Waterfront venues. If you bring a guest with you, please understand that you are responsible for their actions. Several notices are posted along the Waterfront for your safety, and it is your responsibility to take note of them and act accordingly.

Non-ODU Organizations or Groups

If you are a non-ODU organization or group that would like to hold an event at the ODU waterfront, you must request permission to do so. The Director of Facilities Management is the approver of requests from non-University groups or organizations for the use of Educational and General (E&G) facilities and grounds. Requests for use of Auxiliary facilities and grounds (e.g., Webb University Center, Athletics, Ted Constant Convocation Center) by non-University organizations or groups are handled by the respective Auxiliary organization.
